An exciting tool to measure your omega-3 level is now available in New Zealand and is available at Power By Nutrition.
The Omega-3 Index Test is a simple on-the-spot finger prick test that measures the percentage of EPA and DHA in red blood cells (RBC) fatty acids.
The test itself specifically measures:
Omega-3 index (total combined EPA and DHA);
Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio; EPA:Arachidonic acid ratio;
Total Trans Fats; 24 fatty acids (FAs) (Omega-3 FAs; Omega-6 Fas; Monosaturated FAs; Saturated FAs; Trans FAs).
It's understood that 4 out of 5 people are not getting enough omega-3 intake. You can find out what fats make up your cells with the Omega-3 Index Complete test. Diet is not the only thing that determines your blood fatty acid levels – metabolism, genetics, gender, weight, age and other lifestyle factors all can play a role.
For omega-3s and trans fats, eating that fat directly increases blood levels of that fat. Other fatty acids don’t respond to intake. For example, eating a lot of saturated fat doesn’t directly raise blood levels of saturated fat, but eating a lot of carbohydrates does.
This is why testing matters. The only way to know how your blood fatty acid levels and how your diet affects them is to test every 4-6 months. You can’t manage what you don’t measure.
This simple test is available for Power by Nutrition clients.
